LED Signs

Over the past couple of years, arguably the hottest topic in the sign industry has been the arrival of LEDs (light emitting diodes). LED signs have the potential to become a leading technology in illuminated signage with many future possibilities and applications. LEDs can already be used as a practical replacement for neon in certain applications and have operational benefits including lower energy costs, lower maintenance requirements and longer lifespan. With an efficient size and accurate electronic control LEDs may generate a new variety of signage for the future.

LEDs are small semiconductor chips with a distinctive property of producing light when electric currents are applied through it. The colour of the light is influenced by the chemical makeup of the semiconductor and the amount of light emitted is determined by the size, shape, and assembly materials.
LEDs convert electricity directly into light and do not heat a filament or excite a gas. This means that LEDs are intrinsically efficient and convert up to 90% of electricity into light, up to 40% higher than most conventional light sources. This new found efficiency is the revolution that is spreading through the sign and lighting industries.

They operate at safe, low voltages and emit light in an extremely narrow band of colour adding to further efficiency. LEDs are small and versatile with a solid state, low voltage use with minimum heat operation, and are extremely energy efficient. They are becoming more prevalent in the signage industry and have multiple uses providing interactive signage such as simple changing text displays and can also be used as a light source for illuminated signage.

Present LED applications consist of sign illumination, light boxes, outdoor displays, retail displays, and direct lighting of flat cut and built up letters. LED Light boxes replace conventional lighting with white LEDs to give a unique amalgamation of high efficiency and low voltage with a low profile design.

Leading manufacturers such as I.C.E Signs are able to offer the expertise and industry knowledge required to meet the custom sign requirements of their customers, with a flexibility to adapt to a changing market for your needs.

Neon Signage

Subtle use of neon lighting can be effective in high street retail environments and strong use can produce the classic retro look and feel. Sheets of silver metallic Dibond can be folded and shaped to clad shop exteriors while Neon coupled with a creative use of Stainless Steel can be effective for bar nightclub effects.
Many techniques can be implemented to produce custom neon signs including exposed neon tubes mounted on toughened glass. Exposed neon underlines complementary to the surrounding architecture can be used with colour coded neon tubes in individual built up lettering to give halo and corresponding face illumination. Acrylic lettering can be illuminated internally by neon tubes onto aluminium fascias to produce a slick visual exterior.

Lightboxes

Available in a variety of materials such as Perspex, Aluminium, PVC, stainless steel, glass, acrylic or mdf, Lightboxes can be internally illuminated by neon, LED, or other methods to create visually appealing signage and displays.
Many techniques can be used including flexi-face canvas stretched over extruded boxes to eliminate panel joints and create large impact signage.
Fascias with internal illumination and built up acrylic letters and logos can be used to create a projected sign. Fret cut logos with back lighting on total block Perspex produce interesting effects for nightclubs and bars and translucent materials on Perspex produce a look typically associated with take aways and high impact retail environments.
